How did you get started in the industry?
Growing up in NYC, I was exposed to art at quite a young age. My friends and I formed an art collective and through this, I developed a passion for documentation, photography and creative writing. By the time I went to Bard College in Upstate NY, my focus was already in filmmaking.
I made a thesis film Chopping Onions which catapulted me into the world of film festivals and have been making films ever since. This world of making short films naturally seg-wayed into meeting a lot of future collaborators and expanding my work in music videos and commercials.
It was a lot about saying yes, learning what I enjoyed and what I didn’t and meeting really wonderful people throughout the course of these years that has built my understanding and capacity as a director.
Where do you find your inspiration from?
Real life, memories, travelling, and a lot of walking. I often find myself living nomadically, which brings solitude, introspection and a lot of day dreaming. I find my mind really illuminates on trains and places that are foreign to me.
What do you love about the filmmaking process?
Collaborating with other creative minds and building temporary universes.
Is there a particular piece you’re most proud of?
My short film MOVING is a piece that I made with very little funds, in a very short period of time, with a crew I absolutely loved working with, and an experience that was filled with a lot of wonderful laughs. The film has gotten a bigger response than I could’ve imagined and gives me faith in the power of simplicity.
Why are you excited about joining electriclime°?
Working with electriclime° is an amazing opportunity to expand my horizons physically and creatively. It’s a dream to travel as a director and work in new environments, learn from them and have these new places inform my work. I think it can only make one a better director to constantly have new experience and dive in with curiosity.
Is there an area of filmmaking you’d like to explore/excites you for the future?
I’m really interested in dance and movement and know that the potential for incorporating this into ideas for commercials offers so many possibilities. I love the idea of working in vast beautiful landscapes, to showcase more nature and to play around with surreal imagery and tones.
What’s next for Adinah Dancyger?
Working on a couple films here in New York City, travelling, thinking about the next possible project!
