How did you both get started in the industry?
Being mates since we were 5 years old, I think it was just the blind leading the blind until we both fell for film. Sam’s dad (Bill) owned a Blockbuster as well, drip feeding us since we were kids.
Where do you draw your inspirations from?
We’re big fans of genre films, more specifically noir. A lot of great neo-noir intersects that beautiful old pulpy aesthetic with raw, authentic character driven stories. That’s our little bubble I think. To drop some names; older era, Martin Ritt. Modern era, Debra Granik.
How do the dynamics of being a director duo work?
We’re very lucky in that there’s an unspoken fluidity between us that rarely needs to be addressed, which helps a tonne managing the logistical demands of a set, and the creative hurdles of a writers room. We also live together, so from sunrise to sunset it’s relentless.
Where do you think the benefits of being a duo really shine?
Accountability and quality control. There’s nothing in the world we’d trade for the benefits and enjoyment that sharing an idea with your partner brings. Being a pair is like a sieve, everything must go through us both removing anything contrived, egotistical or pretentious until distilled into its most authentic form; from ideas to attitudes, culture to personality flaws, the whole shebang.
Why are you excited to join electriclime°?
Collaborating with teams that hold a certain standard of work is forever a goalpost of ours. As we navigate the industry there’s nothing more invigorating than aligning yourself with great minds and brilliant mentors that clearly have set a high bar for themselves.
Where do you see the future of the industry going?
Commercially, as things become more crowded and every image fights for our attention, our hope is concepts are forced into exciting new directions and storytellers are let loose with innovative and engaging styles.
What’s next for Kids of Bill?
The silver screen, touch wood. There’s our short film ‘Mutt’, currently in post, our most ambitious endeavour to date. And commercially, putting our money where our mouth is and crafting some stand out projects with the kidsofbill stamp laid on thick.
